4/7/2020 (Permalink)

During this unprecedented time caused by the global pandemic of coronavirus, this is a reminder to our customers that we are specialists in cleaning services, and we adhere to the highest cleaning and sanitation standards.

Specialized Training

We are prepared to clean and disinfect your home or business, according to protocols set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We have years of experience in dealing with biological contaminants, and we will go beyond the scope of work that regular janitorial staff perform on a daily basis.

The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets and tables. Other spaces mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces include:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms
  • Offices
  • Retail Spaces
  • Water Fountains
  • Shelving/Racks
  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets and Rugs
  • Stair Handrails
  • Elevator Cars
  • Playground Equipment
  • Fitness Equipment

Specialized Products

The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. Multiple products in the SERVPRO product line carry the EPA-approved emerging pathogens claims. While there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus, we are following all guidelines as provided by the CDC and local authorities.

According to the CDC, at this time, "The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus." The CDC recommends the following steps to take to protect yourself;

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

We Protect The Contents Of Your Property

2/5/2020 (Permalink)

Suffering a fire, smoke, water, sewage or storm disaster leaves you feeling so vulnerable, as both your home and your clothing, furniture and other treasured possessions may have been damaged or destroyed. SERVPRO of Newton Wellesley not only handles every aspect of restoring your home, we also treat your possessions with the utmost care.

Earlier in 2019, SERVPRO rolled out a new digital inventory system that tracks your possessions while we clean and store them and repair your home. We know at a glance the location of your items as well as their status: being cleaned or in storage.

A Secure Process, End to End

SERVPRO cares for 100% of your possessions. The process starts at your home, where our project manager evaluates each item to determine the necessary treatment. While you watch, we photograph each item, then secure your furniture in blankets and fragile items in bubble wrap. Then we wrap everything in plastic, label it with your name and unique QR-code. Smaller personal items are boxed, photographed, sealed and labeled.

Once all is packed, you review and sign off on a tracking form that lists all the items with photos. Further on in the process, this list can form the basis of your insurance claim. We then load your wrapped possessions into storage containers or vaults (also labeled and QR-coded) and transport everything to our storage and operations facility in Bloomfield. Constructed in 2015, it is one of the largest SERVPRO warehouses in the nation.

With a scan, SERVPRO staff can immediately tell if a particular item needs cleaning, is being or has been cleaned (and when) or is waiting in a secure storage container. We entrust certain items, like smoke-damaged clothing, or unique possessions, like pianos or pool tables, to our network of reliable specialty cleaners. When a homeowner needs to retrieve items before the restoration is completed—documents for insurance claims or the contents of a kitchen, for example—we can quickly locate the items in our inventory system.

An Unbroken Chain of Custody

Once all items have been returned to your home, you review and sign off on the original tracking form to ensure that all your items are present, clean and in good condition. Thanks to our proven procedures and bolstered by our digital inventory system, we ensure an unbroken chain of custody while your possessions are in our care.

When your home and possessions have been damaged by a wind, water or fire event, nothing is more important than restoring everything “Like it never even happened.” Depend on SERVPRO of Glastonbury/Wethersfield to care for your possessions with the highest security and care!

What Business Need To Know About Water

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Top Three Issues You Could Face

Every Wellesley, MA, business owner should have an idea of how to properly maintain their company building, and this includes knowing what potential water problems could occur. Knowing ahead of time what the most common problems are can help you take any necessary preventative measures. From leaking pipes to sewer overflow, here are the top three issues you could face.

1. Basement Water

If your company property has a basement area this may be one of the main places you could see potential water damage. The coolness of the space can make an environment where water can condense, raising the humidity of the area. It is also possible for water to pool against the foundation after a rainstorm and seep in. If you believe there may be water problems in your basement it’s best to contact a local water damage restoration service as quickly as possible.

2. Pipe Leaks

In other cases leaking pipes may be your main concern. This can occur from old plumbing, ill fitted pipework, or after an extreme temperature drop. If the plumbing in your company building has not been winterized you may be at risk for a pipe break as well.

3. Plumbing Problems

One of the most thought about issues are general plumbing problems. Clogs can lead to sink stoppage or a toilet backup, and if left un-monitored there’s a risk for problems with the septic bed as well. If you see signs of possible plumbing issues such as weak flow or discoloration of the water it’s best to contact a professional as quickly as possible.
When you own a business property it’s a good idea to understand the possible water damage complications that could arise. Water can end up in a basement area in a number of ways, cold weather can lead to leaking pipes, and general plumbing issues could arise. Being aware of these things can help you take preventative steps before problems arise.

How Bad Is Black Mold

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Is Black Mold Worse Than Other Types of Mold?

Most people have a general sense of mold as something bad to have in a commercial building, but they might be uncertain on the particulars. For example, many business owners might have the following questions:

  • Are there different types of mold?
  • What does mold look like?
  • Is black mold more serious than other strains of mold?
  • Is the presence of mold a health issue?
  • What is the best course of action to take when mold is found?

The Facts About Mold

When mold growth occurs at your company in Newton, MA, it is helpful to have a basic understanding of the beast. Mold is a fungus that is made up of microscopic spores that can quickly spread throughout a building, especially in damp locations. Many different types of mold exist, often in close proximity to one another. Mold colonies often produce a dark or green discoloration on tiles and other materials. The scientific name for black mold is Stachybotrys chartarum and like other types of mold, it should be cleaned out of a public space. Too much mold in an enclosed space can degrade indoor air quality and cause irritation to many people. When mold growth is present or even suspected, a professional mold mitigation company should be called in to assess the situation. Mold cleanup should begin as soon as possible to get mold levels back to normal.

The Facts About Mold Remediation

The goal of mold cleanup is not to get rid of every possible spore since this is close to impossible, but to control the growth of mold. This can be done with the services of a qualified mold technician and equipment such as physical barriers, air filtration systems, and effective cleaning agents.
These steps will work on black mold and other strains of mildew and fungus. In the end, all materials such as carpeting, clothing, and furniture will either be restored to the original condition or replaced.

Do You Have A Fire Plan

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

How To Prepare Your Business for a Fire

Without proper preparation, a relatively minor emergency can have tragic consequences for a Reservoir, RI, business. That is why all employers should create a contingency plan.
In fact, most companies are legally required to have an emergency action plan (EAP) in place. According to Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations, an EAP is necessary in workplaces that plan to evacuate employees and have fire extinguishers present. An EAP must include the following:

  • A procedure for reporting emergencies
  • An evacuation plan
  • A way to account for all employees after the evacuation
  • Medical or rescue duties being performed by employees, if applicable

Additions To Your Plan

You may not want to stop with these minimum requirements. To truly protect your employees, your contingency plan could also include a description of the various alarms that will go off in the event of an emergency. Make sure that any disabled workers will be able to understand the alarm system.
You may also want to come up with an alternative communications location where everyone can gather in the event of fire or smoke damage to the property. You may similarly opt to find a safe place to store important records. Keep these documents in a location where they can be protected from water damage if the sprinklers go off.

Implementing Your Plan

Once the plan is in place, select an employee to lead the facility in event of an emergency. That person will oversee the evacuation procedures and decide when to activate them.
Your employees should also be trained so they understand the plan. Consider holding practice drills to test the effectiveness of the EAP. You can then adjust it accordingly.
By creating a contingency plan in advance, you can limit the spread of a blaze and protect your employees. Still, even if you prepare for an emergency ahead of time, you could still sustain fire damage to your property. That is why you should also give your workers the contact information for a local cleanup and restoration services company.

It Is Time To Think Of Spring Cleaning

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

The holidays are over and as springtime quickly approaches, it is time to think about starting your annual spring cleaning.

SERVPRO is a member of the EPA's Design for Environment (DfE) program. DfE evaluates human health and environmental concerns associated with traditional and alternative chemicals and processes. These evaluations and analyses empower hundreds of businesses to select safer chemicals and technologies. The EPA/DfE has established a set of criteria for formulating environmentally friendly cleaning products, and has put together a listing of safe cleaning components that can be used in Green cleaning formulations. As a member company, SERVPRO can access this listing known as CleanGredients and uses it as a resource to formulate environmentally friendly cleaning products that incorporate "green" chemistry.

We have formulated three Green Cleaning Products that will allow you to complete almost all of your spring cleaning tasks.

Carpet & Upholstery Green Clean #251 is a product designed for cleaning both carpet and upholstery. It is truly a "one product does all" in that it can be used as a spotter, pre-spray, in-line cleaner for both truck mount and portable equipment, and in low-moisture bonnet cleaning. The product is pH neutral, biodegradable, contains no phosphates, solvents, dyes or fragrances. All Surface Green Clean #250 is an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional surface cleaners. It is pH neutral, contains no dyes or fragrances. All components are safe, non-toxic, phosphate free, Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) compliant and rapidly bio-degradable. The product is designed as a one product cleans all for surfaces that can be wiped or mopped. It can safely be used on walls, ceilings, countertops, floors, etc. The exclusive formulation contains both ionic and non-ionic surfactants that are naturally derived and provide excellent multi-functional cleaning. Window Green Clean #249 is an environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional glass cleaners. It is pH neutral, contains no dyes or fragrances. All components are safe, non-toxic, phosphate free, VOC-compliant and rapidly biodegradable. The product comes ready to use and is formulated with soft water to eliminate spotting and streaking. While SERVPRO of Newton Wellesley helps to restore property after fire and water damages, we also specialize in the cleaning and deodorization of carpets, upholstery, draperies, hard floors, walls, ceilings, air ducts, and more. Set up an appointment today to kick off your spring cleaning.

Is Your Shower Moldy

1/30/2020 (Permalink)

When you find mold in your shower it can be a frustrating problem. Moisture of any kind is a food source for mold, so it thrives in most bathrooms and basements. You do not have to live with a moldy shower. If the infestation is limited to a small area, you can attempt mold cleanup yourself. Here are some steps to follow for removing black mold from your shower.

Stay Safe

As always, safety should be your top priority when you attempt to get rid of mold in your Wellesley, MA home. It is important to wear rubber gloves and old clothes. Also, proper ventilation is necessary. Open a window and turn on the ceiling fan to keep the bathroom ventilated. When you are finished with the black mold cleanup, take off your gloves and clothes immediately and bag them so they don’t spread spores throughout your home. You can throw them away, but if you would like, your closes can be cleaned in a washing machine using hot water.

Create a Cleaning Solution

There are plenty of cleaning solution options to choose from. You may purchase cleaning supplies at your local hardware store. If you would like a more green approach, white vinegar is an effective and non-toxic choice. Alternatively, you can also combine a gallon of water with a cup of Borax. Borax is a white powder laundry detergent you can find at your local supermarket. A bleach solution is an option too, but that can be dangerous and should only be used as a last resort.

Use the Solution

Pour your cleaning solution into a common household spray bottle. Spray the entire affected area with the liquid, making sure to go slightly beyond the visible infestation, saturating the mold but not creating any puddles. Then wipe away the mold and the cleaner using a cloth. If the mold remains, use a hand held scrub brush to remove the rest. The best tool to use to remove shower mold stuck in caulking or grout is an old toothbrush.

By following the above suggestions, you can limit the mold damage in your home. If the problem persists or if the damage is significant, you should contact your local mold remediation and cleanup experts here at SERVPRO of Newton Wellesley. We will make it, "Like it never even happened."

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Ted and Doris Isaacson launched SERVPRO in 1967 as a painting business in Sacramento, Calif. With a background in cleaning and restoration, however, Ted and Doris soon transformed the company into a franchisor of cleanup and restoration specialists.

After selling its first Franchise in 1969, SERVPRO continued to grow, acquiring the Bristol-Myers Domesticare Division and its 175 Franchises in 1979.

SERVPRO relocated the corporate headquarters from Sacramento to Gallatin, TN, in 1988 in a strategic move to place itself within 600 miles of 50% of the U.S. population.

At the time of the relocation, the SERVPRO System consisted of 647 Franchises.

SERVPRO Corporate quickly became a key contributor in its community, and in 1991 the Nashville Business Journal named SERVPRO the Small Business of the Year. In the meantime the company continued its impressive growth, selling the 1,000th Franchise in 2000. Learn more about our Awards and Recognition.

In 2005, SERVPRO moved to a 140,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility in Gallatin to provide more room for expansion.

The Power of Essential Oils

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Have you ever worried about the antimicrobial products that you use? Sure they do the job but are they toxic? Are they suitable for use around children, pets, the chemically-sensitive or the elderly? Are they environmentally responsible & sustainable? Botanical products are the answer to all of these questions.

How can a disinfectant be less toxic than vinegar?

In nature, plants produce germ-killing 'essential oils' to protect themselves from invading microbes, similar to how our bodies produce antibodies for our protection. Benefect is a revolutionary blend of these antimicrobial extracts, particularly from the herb Thyme, and achieves remarkable efficacy ...without using any traditional synthetic chemicals

Here at SERVPRO we use Benefact. And people have asked what do we mean when we say Benefect is authentically botanical? “Authentic” is defined as not false or copied, genuine, real. “Botanical” means a substance obtained from a plant. Benefect was the world’s first and is still the ONLY authentically botanical disinfectant technology. It doesn’t use synthetic active ingredients but contains thyme and other essential oils, that are nonhazardous and sustainable, to kill the germs.

SERVPRO of Newton/Wellesley Offers Air Duct Cleaning Too

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

According to the National Air Ducts Cleaners Association (NADCA) Air Duct cleaning is an important component to improving indoor air quality and having a healthy home.  In addition to normal accumulations of dust and dirt found in all homes with air ducts, there are several other factors that can increase the need for regular HVAC system cleaning:

  • pets
  • occupants with allergies or asthma
  • cigarette or cigar smoke
  • water contamination or damage to the home or HVAC system
  • home renovation or remodeling projects

Some occupants are more sensitive to these contaminants than others. Allergy and asthma sufferers, as well as young children and the elderly tend to be more susceptible to the types of poor indoor air quality that air duct cleaning can help address.

Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality. Make it a priority to inspect the ductwork of your home or business.

If your HVAC has been operating for some time without attention, it could be circulating odors, dust and other contaminates.

SERVPRO of Newton/Wellelsley routinely inspect the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC).  Keeping them clean can extend the life of the equipment. This can in turn save you money and give you cleaner air to breathe.

Pipe Freezing Season

1/24/2019 (Permalink)

It’s January in New England, which means Pipe Freezing Season! Anyone who has experienced this unexpected disaster knows the extent to which it can cause damage and disruption to the comfort and security to your home. In addition, it is a common misnomer to think this only happens when you are away or when a home is vacated.

When water freezes, it expands and sadly what most people do not know is that even metal cannot contain this tremendous expansion. The pipes most susceptible to freezing are outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supplies lines and water sprinkler lines are water supply pipes contained in unheated interior areas like basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, and even kitchen cabinets. These pipes run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.

Flooding and water emergencies don’t wait for regular business hours and neither do we! SERVPRO Newton/Wellesley provides emergency water restoration services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In trouble? Give us a call and we will be there ASAP!
